Skotoussa was a Thessalian polis of middling consequence until 367 BC, when Jason of Pherae's successors were fracturing the Thessalian League he had violently unified. This bronze issue almost certainly belongs to a brief window of local monetary autonomy that communities like Skotoussa exercised when central Pheraean control weakened — the kind of political gap that produces small civic bronzes and disappears just as quickly.
The city was later razed by Philip II of Macedon, making any of its coinage effectively terminus ante quem material.
