Additional information

Pherai rose to regional dominance under Jason, who by 374 BC had unified Thessaly as tagos — the first to hold that office with genuine pan-Thessalian authority in generations. His bronze coinage, issued through this period, funded a military apparatus that alarmed both Sparta and Macedonia simultaneously. Jason was assassinated in 370 BC, just months after Xenophon described him as the most dangerous man in Greece.
