Thebes in Thessaly — distinct from the more famous Boeotian city — was a minor but persistent issuer during a period of sustained Macedonian pressure on the region. These bronzes were struck in the years bracketing the Wars of the Diadochi, when control of Thessaly passed between the successors following Cassander's consolidation of Macedonia after 316 BC. The city retained enough civic autonomy to mint locally, though that autonomy was increasingly nominal.
Rogers 552 and the BCD Thessaly material remain the primary reference points for attributing this type, with the BCD collection having provided the most systematic die study of Thessalian civic bronzes to date.
