正面描述 Head of Hermes facing left, depicted wearing a petasos adorned with a serpent and rendered in fine archaic-transitional style characteristic of Arkadian civic coinage. The hair flows in wavy locks behind the neck, and a crescent and pellet ornament is visible at the ear or cheek area. The facial features are sensitively modeled with a slightly idealized, youthful expression. The portrait fills the flan with no surrounding legend.

附加信息

Pheneos was a minor Arkadian city whose political allegiances shifted repeatedly during the fourth century — it sided with Sparta, then against it, then sought shelter under Macedonian influence as the old polis order crumbled. Bronze civic coinage like this dichalkon was almost certainly struck to facilitate local market exchange rather than inter-city commerce, a practical response to the near-total Athenian monopoly on small bronze circulation across the wider Greek world. The BCD Peloponnesos specimen catalogued as 1623 passed through one of the most rigorously documented Peloponnesian series ever assembled at auction.
