The Magnetes were a Thessalian people whose federal coinage emerged in the wake of Roman reorganization of Macedonia and Greece following the Third Macedonian War in 168 BC. Their bronze issues, including this dichalkon, belong to a period when Thessaly operated under Roman supervision as a nominally autonomous league — permitted to coin, but within a political framework that Rome could dissolve at will. Rogers 348 places this type within a relatively compact emission sequence, suggesting controlled rather than prolonged production.
