| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a stylised Carolingian royal monogram composed of interlaced letters, executed in bold relief against a flat, unadorned field. The monogram is constructed from the letters forming the mint name Melle, arranged in a symmetrical, cross-like ligature characteristic of mid-8th-century Frankish monetary convention. The design is enclosed within a beaded border, partially visible along the coin's irregular flan edge. The overall execution is typical of the hammered provincial coinage of the Frankish kingdom, with a somewhat crude but purposeful die-cutting style. No effigy or bust is present, the monogram alone serving as the primary identifying device. |
