The cross arms extend to the inner circle, dividing the field into four equal quadrants. A Latin legend reading LODOICVS, invoking the Carolingian king Louis IV, runs clockwise in the outer annular field between the beaded circle and the coin's irregular rim, preceded by a cross pommée. The die-cutting is characteristic of 12th-century feudal French hammered coinage, with somewhat crude but deliberate lettering. |
