Reverse description The central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle, displays a small central cross with four annulets disposed one in each quadrant formed by the cross arms, a composition characteristic of the immobilized Carolingian denier type struck at Angoulême. A cross — varying by die variety between a simple full cross and a lozenge-shaped (voided) cross — appears at 12 o'clock in the legend as a mark of punctuation. The Latin circumscription EGOLISSIME, identifying the mint of Angoulême, runs in the outer annular field between the beaded circle and the coin's irregular hammered rim.
