| Obverse description | Schematic profile bust facing left, rendered in a debased late antique style characteristic of early Merovingian coinage, with the hair dissolving into a series of pellets above and behind the head. A small cross is placed in the field before the face. A partially preserved Latin legend runs along the periphery of the coin, reading [...] VANE, with the remainder lost to the irregular flan edge. The overall execution is crude and abstracted, reflecting the hand-engraved artistry of eighth-century Frankish die-cutters. |
