Obverse description A plain, broad cross with squared ends occupies the central field, extending nearly to the inner beaded border. The four quadrants formed by the cross arms are plain. A circular legend in Latin characters runs between the inner beaded circle and the coin's irregular rim, reading + GVILE DOMINVS, identifying the issuing lord as William. The style is characteristic of feudal French hammered billon coinage of the late thirteenth to early fourteenth century.
