Vladislaus I — also known as Władysław III of Poland — ruled Hungary for less than three years before dying at the Battle of Varna in November 1444, where a crusading force was routed by Ottoman troops under Murad II. He was twenty years old. The chaos following that defeat left Hungary without a confirmed king for years, and coins struck during his reign were produced under considerable administrative instability.
The extreme light weight of this billon issue reflects the degraded silver content typical of mid-15th century Hungarian small denomination coinage, a product of sustained fiscal pressure from ongoing Ottoman campaigning along the southern frontier.
