Vladislaus I ruled Bohemia as duke before Frederick Barbarossa elevated him to king in 1158 — a reward for military support during the Italian campaigns, specifically the siege of Milan. The royal title was personal, not hereditary, which lent his reign a provisional quality that is reflected in the uneven output of his mints.
