The Vierzipfliger ("four-pointed") deniers of Habsburg-Laufenburg belong to the formative decades of the Habsburg dynasty, when the family's territorial ambitions were still confined to the upper Rhine and Aargau. These thin, bracteate-influenced pfennigs circulated in a region where multiple competing ecclesiastical and secular mints made monetary fragmentation the norm rather than the exception. The distinctive four-lobe flan shape was a regional minting convention, not a Habsburg invention.
