Ulrich II ruled Carinthia during a period when the duchy was caught between competing Babenberg and Wittelsbach ambitions following the extinction of the Spanheim male line's grip on the region. His coinage reflects the fragmented minting authority typical of the late 12th-century Austrian duchies, where local lords struck deniers in silver of variable fineness as central imperial control over coin production remained largely theoretical.
