Obverse description Central field bears a crowned fleur-de-lis flanked by two additional fleurs-de-lis forming the royal arms of France in stylized Gothic fashion, set within a beaded inner circle. The mint mark of Lyon appears in the lower field. The surrounding legend reads FRANCISCVS D GRA FR REX, identifying Francis I as King of France by the grace of God. The lettering is rendered in Gothic characters typical of mid-sixteenth-century French hammered coinage. The overall design is characteristic of the Tournois denier tradition, with a slightly irregular flan consistent with hand-struck production.
