Obverse description Central field displays a fleur-de-lis, the heraldic emblem of the French royal house, set within a linear inner circle. The surrounding legend in Latin reads FRANCISCVS D G FRANC T, identifying Francis I as King of France by the grace of God. The die-struck design is characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the early sixteenth century, with irregular flan edges typical of hand-struck production. The Dauphiné regional attribution is reflected in the coin's specific type designation for the Grenoble mint.
