Obverse description The obverse bears the royal legend of Louis XIII in Latin, commencing at 6 o'clock within a smooth inner circle and an outer dotted border. The legend reads LOYS XIII R DE FRAN ET NAV followed by the mint mark letter A for Paris. The field is plain, with no central effigy, the design being entirely typographic in character. Note: for the 1625 issue, a small number of specimens exist featuring a thinner bust and different lace rendering.
