| Beschrijving voorzijde | Bare bust of Henri III facing right, rendered in low relief in the hammered style typical of late 16th-century French copper coinage. The portrait is relatively crude, with the king depicted without crown or diadem. The circular Latin legend reads HENRI.III.R.DE.FRAN.ET.P.H., abbreviated for Henricus III Rex Franciae et Poloniae Hispaniae, running around the entire periphery of the flan. |

The denier tournois was revived in copper under Henri III as part of a broader monetary ordinance of 1575 aimed at stabilizing petty coinage after decades of debasement and civil war disruption had hollowed out the lower denominations. La Rochelle's mint, operating under Huguenot-tolerant arrangements during this period of the Wars of Religion, was one of several provincial mints authorized to strike the new type. The "1st type" distinction matters: a revised design was introduced within a few years, making the La Rochelle emission from this narrow window relatively short-lived in production terms.
