Additional information

Gaston d'Orléans received the Principality of Dombes in 1627 as part of a settlement following the disgrace of his mother Marie de Médicis, and he proceeded to exercise his minting rights there with unusual persistence — issuing coins through multiple political upheavals, including the Fronde, which was actively tearing France apart during precisely these years. The Fronde des Princes reached its peak in 1650, the very moment this type was being struck at Trévoux.

The 9th type designation reflects how frequently Gaston's Dombes issues were revised, a numismatic record that tracks his turbulent relationship with royal authority more faithfully than most historical documents.
