Frédéric-Maurice de la Tour d'Auvergne inherited the Principality of Orange through a convoluted succession, but Louis XIV had already effectively decided the principality's fate — French forces occupied Orange repeatedly through the latter half of the seventeenth century, and the 1678 Treaty of Nijmegen would formalize French dominance over the enclave. This denier was struck just a year before that settlement, making it among the last autonomous copper issues of a sovereignty that would be definitively annexed by France in 1713 following the Treaty of Utrecht.
