Theoderich of Basel (1041–1055) received minting rights as part of the broader imperial grant of temporal powers to the see — a pattern Henry III extended deliberately to loyal ecclesiastical lords as a counterweight to secular nobility. Basel's episcopal mint at this period was producing deniers whose weight standard tracked closely to the regional Alsatian norm rather than the Rhenish, reflecting the diocese's geographic ambiguity between competing monetary zones.
The Michel reference Bâle#13 places this among the rarer documented episcopal issues of the mid-eleventh century Rhineland series.
