| Reverse description | Inscription arranged on three lines across the field within a beaded inner circle, reading MA / VIRGO with a rosette ornament and cross below, referencing the Virgin Mary as patron of the see of Verdun. Decorative pellets and a floral or stellate motif punctuate the lower field, adding devotional emphasis. The flan is irregular and slightly scalloped at the rim, consistent with the hammered technique. The bold, deeply cut lettering is characteristic of Lotharingian episcopal coinage of the mid-to-late 11th century. |
