Stephen III's reign was defined almost entirely by dynastic contest. His uncles Ladislaus II and Stephen IV, backed by Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Komnenos, repeatedly displaced him from the throne — Stephen III was deposed twice before finally holding power continuously from 1163.
