Stephen III came to the Hungarian throne as a teenager in 1162, immediately triggering a dynastic crisis when Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos backed two rival claimants — Stephen's uncles Ladislaus II and Stephen IV — in rapid succession. The resulting instability meant royal minting authority was contested and intermittent throughout much of his reign, which almost certainly accounts for the irregular fabric and underweight character observed across survivors of this type.
