Bishop Rupert of Bamberg held the see during one of the most turbulent episodes in medieval German history — the Investiture Controversy, the bitter conflict between Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII over the right to appoint clergy. Bamberg, as an imperial bishopric founded by Henry II in 1007 precisely to anchor royal authority in Franconia, was deeply implicated in that struggle. Rupert's coinage rights derived directly from imperial grant, and coins struck under his authority were as much a declaration of that relationship as they were a medium of exchange.
