Obverse description Central field occupied by a plain cross pattee dividing the inner area into four quarters, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding annular legend zone carries the royal inscription in Latin capital letters, with a cross at the commencement. The outer border is decorated with a continuous ring of large pointed pellets or lozenge-shaped bosses characteristic of early Capetian hammered coinage. The overall fabric is irregular and slightly convex, consistent with hand-struck medieval production.
