| Beschrijving keerzijde | A closed hand, symbolic of episcopal or regal authority, depicted in low relief at the center of the coin within a beaded border. The hand is rendered in a schematic, stylized manner typical of Ottonian-era coinage. The surrounding legend HEINRICVS REX invokes the name of Emperor Henry III, reflecting the dual authority of bishop and emperor on this issue. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Verdun's bishops held the right to strike coin under imperial delegation, and this denier reflects a precise political moment: the reign of Bishop Richard I coincided with Henry III's aggressive consolidation of imperial authority over the Lotharingian church. Henry's deposition of multiple bishops across the region in the 1040s made Verdun's continued minting under his name a careful act of loyalty — or at least a visible performance of it.
The tight date range of 1039–1046 corresponds to Richard I's episcopate before Henry reorganized ecclesiastical appointments following the Synod of Sutri.
