| Reverse description | The reverse bears a cross pattée centered in the field, with arms that broaden toward their extremities, a common device on Aquitainian feudal deniers of the Angevin period. The legend AGVITANIE arcs around the periphery of the coin, identifying the duchy of Aquitaine as the issuing authority. The inscription is preceded by a cross as a stop mark. The design is executed in the simple, bold style typical of hammered billon coinage of the mid-to-late twelfth century, with the lettering and cross showing the characteristic irregularities of hand-struck production. |
