Richard I of Normandy — Richard the Fearless, as contemporaries called him — ruled a duchy still consolidating its identity barely two generations after Rollo's Seine settlements. His coinage drew heavily on Carolingian denier conventions, a deliberate signal of political legitimacy to Frankish neighbors who regarded the Norse-descended dukes with persistent suspicion. The pellet-in-pediment variety is among the more readily distinguished types within an otherwise difficult series to attribute precisely.
