Obverse description Central fleur-de-lis rendered in a bold, archaic Romanesque style, composed of stylized petals with pellet ornaments, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A retrograde or partially garbled Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading BARCINO, denoting the city of Barcelona. The lettering is crudely executed in the angular hand characteristic of Catalan hammered coinage of the twelfth century. The overall composition is strongly symmetrical, with the fleur-de-lis arms extending toward the inner border.
