Issoudun, situated in the Berry region, changed hands repeatedly between the counts of Bourges, the lords of Déols, and the French crown across the twelfth century. Ralph II held the lordship during a period when the Plantagenet expansion under Henry II was beginning to press against the eastern boundaries of French royal influence — placing Issoudun squarely in contested territory. The town would later become a direct object of dispute between Philip II and Richard I, who famously quarreled over it in 1195.
