| Obverse description | Central field bears a stylized fleur-de-lis or coronet motif enclosed within a beaded inner circle, characteristic of the Provençal coronat type. The design is rendered in the crude, high-relief style typical of hammered billon deniers of the mid-thirteenth century. The surrounding outer legend, separated from the central device by the beaded ring, reads ✠ K DI GRA REX CICIL, identifying Charles as king of Sicily by the grace of God. The flan is irregular in shape, as is standard for hand-struck medieval coinage of this period and region. |
