Poppo of Treffen held the patriarchate of Aquileia from 1019 to 1042, appointed by Henry II and firmly embedded in the Ottonian-Salian imperial church system. The pairing of his name with Conrad II on this denier reflects a specific political reality: Conrad's coronation as Holy Roman Emperor in 1027 granted Aquileia renewed confirmation of its temporal privileges, and the coinage was almost certainly struck to advertise that alliance. Aquileian deniers of this period draw directly from the northern Italian imperial minting tradition, with Poppo exercising comital rights over the mint that the patriarchs had accumulated since the tenth century.
