Denier Poitiers

Poitiers functioned as a major Merovingian mint town, and deniers struck there in the late seventh and early eighth centuries fall into the murky transitional period between royal Merovingian authority and the rising administrative grip of the Carolingian mayors of the palace. By the 690s, centralized control over Frankish coinage had effectively collapsed — dozens of local moneyers operated with significant autonomy, producing issues whose attribution to a specific political authority remains genuinely contested among specialists.
