Additional information

Conrad II made a famous pilgrimage to Rome in 1027 for his imperial coronation by Pope John XIX, and the archbishops of Cologne held coinage rights at Andernach under imperial grant. This denier type directly commemorates the association between the Cologne archbishopric's minting authority and Conrad's early reign — the "pilgrim and emperor" attribution reflecting the political alignment between ecclesiastical and imperial power in the Rhineland during the 1020s–30s. Andernach was one of several Rhenish mints active under archiepicscopal control at this period, and output was modest.
