Piéforts — struck at double or greater thickness from standard dies — were rarely produced for circulation. This example dates to the opening months of the Hungarian succession crisis following the catastrophic Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526, which killed King Louis II and left the throne contested. John Zápolya, backed by Sultan Suleiman, was crowned in opposition to Habsburg claimant Ferdinand I. Both men issued coinage simultaneously, making attribution and authority a live political question embedded in every piece struck.
Whether this piedfort was a presentation piece, a die trial, or a weight standard remains unresolved in the literature.
