| Obverse description | Crude draped bust of Philip III facing right, occupying the central field of this small hammered copper denier. The effigy is rendered in a simplified, provincial style characteristic of early seventeenth-century Catalan municipal coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading +PHILIPPVS·D·G·HISPAN·R, identifying the monarch as Philip, King of the Spains by the Grace of God. The coin is struck on an irregular flan with a beaded border visible along the upper portion of the coin. |

Vic's municipal coinage authority was among the few in Catalonia permitted to strike copper deniers under the terms negotiated with the Crown of Aragon and later confirmed under Habsburg rule. The 1611 issue falls within a period of chronic small-change shortages across the Iberian Peninsula, when municipal and seigneurial mints filled gaps the royal apparatus could not — or would not — address. Cal#916 and Cal#917 represent distinct die varieties of this type, a distinction Calicó documented without resolving the question of whether both varieties were struck in the same emission or represent separate authorizations.
