| Obverse description | Central field displays a cross pattée formed by the letters of the royal monogram, arranged in a cruciform pattern typical of Capetian billon deniers. The legend PHILIPVS REX FRA/OCN, reading 'Philip, King of the Franks,' surrounds the central design in a circular arrangement. The lettering is executed in a bold, somewhat irregular Gothic-influenced style characteristic of hammered medieval coinage. The flan is irregular and shows typical die wear consistent with hand-struck production of the period. |
