Obverse description Royal Carolingian monogram of Pepin the Short occupying the central field, formed by the interlaced letters R and P in bold raised relief, surmounted by a horizontal bar or fillet across the upper portion of the design. The monogram is rendered in a characteristic early medieval style with rounded, looping strokes. A pellet border or series of globules frames the design along the irregular coin edge, typical of eighth-century Frankish hammered coinage.
