| Beschrijving keerzijde | A large central globule set within a beaded inner circle occupies the central field, itself surrounded by a circular Latin legend reading + SCI MARTINI, identifying the issuing religious establishment as the Abbey of Saint Martin of Tours. The lettering is rendered in the angular, somewhat irregular capitals typical of early Carolingian hammered coinage. The overall design is austere and characteristic of the ecclesiastical mint types of the period. The beaded border and the disposition of the legend closely follow the formulaic layout of Merovingian-derived Carolingian deniers. |
