Pépin III seized the Frankish throne in 751 with papal blessing — the first Carolingian king, crowned by Boniface of Mainz while the last Merovingian was shunted into a monastery. These deniers from Reims represent his systematic overhaul of Frankish coinage, wresting minting authority away from the bishops and magnates who had fragmented it across hundreds of small local issues. The reform placed production under royal control and established the weight standard that his son Charlemagne would later codify into the famous pound-of-240-deniers system.
