Obverse description Central field displays the monogram of Pepin the Short rendered in bold, raised letters characteristic of early Carolingian hammered coinage. The monogram incorporates the letters composing the royal title abbreviation, arranged in an interlaced fashion with pellet ornaments at the terminals of each stroke. Small triangular and pellet decorative elements fill the surrounding field. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border of closely spaced pellets following the irregular flan edge. The primitive but distinctive lettering style reflects the transitional artistic conventions of the mid-8th century Frankish workshops.
