The central field bears the mint signature letters N and E in large, boldly incised uncial characters, denoting the Nevers (Nivernensis) mint. The letters are interlaced or juxtaposed in a monogrammatic arrangement typical of early Carolingian provincial deniers. The die work is crude but deliberate, consistent with the mid-eighth-century Frankish minting tradition, and the flan shows slight irregularities in shape and metal flow characteristic of hand-struck coinage. |
