Pépin III seized the Frankish throne in 751 with papal blessing — literally, as Stephen II anointed him at Ponthion in 754, the first such consecration of a Frankish king — and his coinage reforms were as deliberate as his politics. The Le Mans mint was among those reorganized under his authority as he moved toward standardizing silver weight across the realm, a project his son Charlemagne would later complete more rigorously.
