| Obverse description | The obverse displays the PIPINI legend arranged prominently across the field, formed by large capital letters in a bold, early Carolingian epigraphic style. A small crosslet surmounts the lettering above, serving as a decorative and symbolic device. Beneath the inscription, a francisca (Frankish throwing axe) is depicted in profile, turned to the right, a characteristic and culturally significant motif on Pepin's coinage. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, consistent with hand-hammered production. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |
