| Reverse description | Plain hammered flan of irregular circular form bearing the mint monogram 'AV' in large, boldly struck letters dominating the central field, serving as an abbreviated reference to the mint of Clermont-Ferrand (Arvernis or Augustonemetum). A row of pellets arranged in an arc appears along the lower portion of the field, a decorative element common to early Carolingian provincial issues. The flan is irregular in outline, consistent with hand-struck silver deniers of the mid-eighth century. The design is austere and functional, reflecting the primitive die-cutting techniques of the Frankish mints under Pepin the Short. |
