Pépin le Bref seized the Frankish throne in 751 after engineering the deposition of the last Merovingian king, Childeric III, with papal backing secured through Boniface of Mainz. The monetary reform that followed was consequential: Pépin transferred minting authority from hundreds of scattered ecclesiastical and private workshops toward a more controlled royal system, reducing the number of active mints and standardizing the denier as the dominant silver denomination. Chartres, as a significant episcopal center on the route to the Loire, retained its place in that reorganized framework.
