| Opis rewersu | The reverse presents a large central monogram reading ARE, the abbreviated Latin form of Arelas (Arles), identifying the mint of issue. The monogram is rendered in a bold, interlaced capital letter style occupying the majority of the coin's field, with a pellet at center. To the lower portion of the field a horizontal bar or rectangular element with flanking triangular ornaments is visible, and a small cross or quatrefoil appears to the right. Pellets are disposed to the left margin. The design is consistent with Carolingian mint-name monogram reverses of the reign of Pepin the Short, struck on an irregular hammered flan. |
