Obverse description Central field bears a royal crown in low relief above the abbreviated royal name, all enclosed within a plain inner circle. The surrounding legend, rendered in Gothic uncial characters, reads + LVDOVICVS REX FRAn, identifying the issuer as Louis, King of the Franks. The flan is irregular and slightly cracked, characteristic of hammered medieval billon coinage. The design is typical of the Paris mint output under Louis XI, combining simple regnal symbolism with the peripheral inscription.
