Obverse description The name of the countess, ALIEN (Eleanor), is inscribed in two lines across the field in bold hammered Latin letters, forming the central design element. The surrounding circular legend reads ALI EN0 X CO: VIROMENDI, identifying Eleanor as Countess of Vermandois. The flan is irregular and slightly chipped, characteristic of medieval hammered coinage. The lettering is deeply struck in a primitive Romanesque style typical of 12th–13th century feudal deniers. No figural effigy is present; the inscription itself constitutes the primary obverse type.
